A thousand-year-old granite temple whose tower has never been rebuilt, and forty more Chola temples within an hour's bus ride.
The Brihadisvara temple was finished in 1010 and its 66-metre vimana is still the tallest part of the skyline. Around it, the Kaveri delta holds the densest concentration of great temple architecture anywhere in India — Darasuram, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Airavatesvara, and the town of Kumbakonam with eighteen temples inside its own limits. Local buses connect all of it for twenty rupees a leg.

When to go
November to February. April to June on the delta is severe heat; October to December brings the north-east monsoon, which can flood the roads for days.

Dress code is enforced at the major temples — covered shoulders and knees, shoes left outside.
Most temples close between noon and four. Plan mornings and evenings.
The north-east monsoon in October and November can flood delta roads with little warning.

Brihadisvara is free and open at six in the morning. Almost every visitor arrives at eleven.
The whole Chola circuit runs on ₹25 local buses. A car for the day costs a hundred times a bus ticket.
Kumbakonam is cheaper than Thanjavur and closer to most of the outlying temples.
