Five hundred years of everybody arriving by sea left Fort Kochi with a street plan nowhere else in India has. You can walk the whole peninsula in a morning; the ₹6 government ferry from Ernakulam is one of the great cheap boat rides in the country. Come in December of a Biennale year and the warehouses fill with contemporary art.

When to go
November to February is dry and comfortable. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale runs December to April in alternate years. June to September is heavy monsoon, which the old town actually wears well.

Eating
Easy everywhere. Kerala meals are vegetarian by default, and Mattancherry's Gujarati and Jain trading families mean pure-veg and Jain food is genuinely available, which is rare on this coast.

What goes wrong:
The fish-at-the-nets transaction is where visitors get overcharged most in Kerala. Agree the price of the fish and the cooking separately, in writing if needed.
The synagogue is closed Friday and Saturday and to non-worshippers during services.

How to do it cheaper:
The ₹6 government ferry does everything a ₹1,500 sunset cruise does, at sunset, with locals on it.
Stay in Ernakulam and commute by ferry if Fort Kochi rates look silly — it is a 25-minute crossing.
Eat at a mess off Bazaar Road rather than on Princess Street. Same food, a third of the price.
