Kerala Trip Plan for 5 or 7 Days, Without a Package: Routes and Costs
Most Kerala tour packages sell the same loop: Munnar, a houseboat in Alleppey, and Kovalam. This plan covers the same tea hills, backwaters and beach in quieter places next door, by train and bus, with every day priced.

Short answer
For 5 days, do Fort Kochi (1 day), Kumarakom (2 days) and Vagamon (2 days), in and out of Ernakulam by train. It costs about ₹12,200 per person mid-range, or ₹20,800 for a couple, including the train both ways. For 7 days, do Fort Kochi, Thekkady, Vagamon, Kumarakom and Varkala, about ₹15,500 per person or ₹26,400 for a couple. Go between November and February. No package needed: every leg is a train, a bus or a ferry you book yourself.
A Kerala tour package usually means Munnar, an overnight houseboat in Alleppey and a night in Kovalam, with a car and driver in between. Those are the three most crowded places in the state. This plan keeps the same three things, tea hills, backwaters and a beach, and moves each one to a quieter place nearby that Trip Under lists.
Every price, bus, train and month below comes from each stop's Trip Under page. Day costs cover a bed, three meals, local transport and small fees. Couple figures use the same model as our planner, where two people sharing a room pay less each than one. You book every piece yourself. Trip Under is not a travel agency and sells no packages.
The two routes at a glance
| Stop | Instead of | Days (5-day) | Days (7-day) | Mid-range day cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fort Kochi | Goa | 1 | 1 | ₹1,900 |
| Thekkady & Periyar | a big-name tiger reserve | – | 2 | ₹1,900 |
| Vagamon | Munnar's tea-country crowds | 2 | 1 | ₹1,900 |
| Kumarakom | the Alleppey houseboat queue | 2 | 1 | ₹2,200 |
| Varkala | Kovalam | – | 2 | ₹1,600 |
Both routes start at Ernakulam Junction, Kochi's main station. The 5-day route is a loop that ends back in Kochi. The 7-day route runs north to south and ends at Varkala, on the main line to Thiruvananthapuram.

The 7-day Kerala itinerary: add a forest and a cliff beach

Seven days, north to south
You only change at Alleppey for the train. It is a gateway on this route, not a stop.

The Vembanad ferry is listed in our data as running from Alleppey to Kumarakom. On day 6 you ride it the other way, so confirm the departure time at the Kumarakom jetty the evening before. If it is not running, take the bus back to Kottayam (about ₹40) and the train south.

What the 7-day trip costs

|---|---|---|---|
| One person | ₹9,800 | ₹15,500 | – |

What the add-ons cost, per booking
Our day rates include small fees, not these. Add the ones you want to the totals above.
A couple who adds the half-day houseboat and bamboo rafting for both to the 7-day plan spends about ₹34,900 in all. That is still the whole week, door to door, with every booking in your own name.
Only 3 days? Kochi and Kumarakom
Do the first two days of the 5-day plan, add a second morning at Kumarakom, and take the bus back to Kochi (about ₹80). That is about ₹8,300 per person mid-range with the train both ways, or ₹14,200 for a couple. Kerala in three days is the coast and the backwaters only; the hills need the extra two.
Kerala trip plan from Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad
| From | How | Time | Cost each way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | Overnight sleeper bus to Ernakulam | 11 h | ₹1,500 |
| Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad | Train to Ernakulam Junction | varies | about ₹900 |
| Any of the three | Flight to Kochi (COK) | varies | about ₹7,500 |
| Bengaluru (7-day route home) | Bus from Thiruvananthapuram | 14 h + 1 h | ₹2,000 |
- From Bengaluru: the train or the 11 h overnight bus to Ernakulam. On the 7-day route, take the train home from Varkala; our Varkala page says the 14 h + 1 h bus from Thiruvananthapuram is worse in every way.
- From Chennai: the train to Ernakulam Junction is the simple choice, and the 7-day route ends on the same coastal line, so the train home from Varkala works too.
- From Hyderabad: we do not hold a Hyderabad-specific fare. Our ₹900 train figure is a general estimate for reaching Ernakulam from South India, so expect the longer journey from Hyderabad to cost more. The flight to Kochi, about ₹7,500 in our data, saves a day each way.
- By air: the 5-day loop starts and ends near Kochi airport. On the 7-day route, Thiruvananthapuram airport (TRV) is 45 m by local train from Varkala.
A north Kerala version for Bengaluru
If you live in Bengaluru and want the shortest night out, go north instead. Take the overnight bus to Kalpetta for Wayanad (8 h, about ₹1,500; instead of Munnar). Spend three days there, including Chembra Peak, where the permit counter opens early and the daily cap fills by mid-morning. Then take the bus down the ghat to Kozhikode & Kappad (about ₹120), Kerala's food capital, for two days, and the train home (about ₹400). Five days cost about ₹10,800 per person mid-range, or ₹18,500 for a couple. Wayanad is also the one stop here that our data rates best in the monsoon.

Varkala pulls the monsoon months down: its cliff path floods and most cafés close.
November to February is the best time for both routes. Kumarakom's migratory birds are in from November to February, Kochi is dry and comfortable, and Vagamon's season (Jan–Mar, Oct–Dec) covers it all. December and January are peak, so book the train at the window and expect resort prices at Kumarakom to roughly double in December.
- Monsoon, June to September: do the 5-day route, not the 7-day. Kochi wears the rain well, Kumarakom's backwaters are fullest and greenest, and Vagamon is misty, though paragliding and some viewpoints close. Varkala is effectively shut, and Thekkady has heavy rain, poor visibility and leeches on every forest walk.
- March to May: hot and humid on the coast. Vagamon, up on the plateau, is the only stop still rated best in March. Paragliding there runs roughly February to March.
- October: Vagamon and Thekkady are already in season; Varkala comes into season in November.
Which route is right for you
For more places to swap in, such as Marari Beach for Varkala or Kollam's public backwater ferry for Kumarakom, see our Marari and Kollam pages. Pilgrims staying near Kottayam can add the Vaikom, Ettumanoor & Kaduthuruthy Shiva temple circuit (1–2 days, about ₹1,800) on the circuit page.
Booking checklist
- Train to Ernakulam, and home from Ernakulam or Varkala, booked at the opening of the reservation window
- Thekkady bamboo rafting or border hiking, booked weeks ahead at the official forest department counter, not through an agent
- Homestays in Fort Kochi, Kumarakom and Kumily; a tea-estate cottage in Vagamon
- Small cash for ferries, buses, canoes and messes; Vagamon is cash for most things
- Rain gear and salt for leeches if you go between June and September
Frequently asked questions
How many days are enough for a Kerala trip?
Five days covers the backwaters and the hills: Fort Kochi, Kumarakom and Vagamon. Seven days adds Thekkady's forest and Varkala's cliff beach. Three days is enough only for Kochi and Kumarakom.
What is the cost of a 5-day Kerala trip for a couple?
About ₹20,800 for two at mid-range on the 5-day route in this guide, including the train to and from Ernakulam, four nights, food, local transport and small fees. On a shoestring it is about ₹13,300.
How much does a 7-day Kerala trip cost per person?
About ₹15,500 for one person travelling alone at mid-range, or ₹13,200 each for a couple sharing rooms. Houseboats, bamboo rafting and paragliding are extra.
Can I plan a Kerala trip without a tour package?
Yes. Every leg in this plan is a public train, KSRTC bus or government ferry, and every stop has homestays you can book directly. You do not need a car and driver.
Is it worth skipping Munnar and Alleppey?
For a first trip on a budget, yes. Vagamon gives you tea country instead of Munnar's tea-country crowds, and Kumarakom gives you the backwaters instead of the Alleppey houseboat queue. Both are cheaper to sleep in and quieter.
What is the best month for a Kerala trip?
November to February. December and January are peak season, so book trains and the Thekkady forest programmes early. In the monsoon, choose the 5-day route or the Wayanad version.
How do I go to Kerala from Bengaluru?
By train or the 11 h overnight bus to Ernakulam (₹1,500 in our data), or by the 8 h overnight bus to Kalpetta in Wayanad (₹1,500). The Wayanad bus passes through Bandipur and Muthanga, where the reserve road closes at night.
