Where Vasco da Gama first landed in India, a halwa-and-biryani food scene locals will argue about for hours, and a beach town with almost no foreign tourists.

Kozhikode (Calicut) is a big working city on the Malabar coast, not a resort town, which is exactly its appeal: real prices, real food, and a history that runs from ancient spice trade to Vasco da Gama's 1498 landing at nearby Kappad. It has none of the tourist infrastructure of Kochi or Alleppey and, as a result, none of the markup either. The Malabar biryani and Kozhikode halwa here are considered the best versions in Kerala.

When to go
November to February is cool and comfortable. April and May are hot and humid. The southwest monsoon (June–September) is heavy on this coast.

Kozhikode halwa spoils faster than it looks like it should — buy it close to when you'll eat it or gift it.
This is a working city, not a resort — pick a hotel near the centre or beach road if walkability matters to you.
The heaviest monsoon rain (June–July) can disrupt outdoor plans; keep a backup day.
How to do it cheaper:
Eat where the locals queue on SM Street, not at a hotel restaurant — the food is better and a third of the price.
Kappad makes an easy half-day trip and has real historical weight without the crowds of a 'monument'.
Combine it with Wayanad or Kannur — both are under two hours away.
