Bekal & Kasaragod
A circular laterite fort on a headland, empty beaches either side of it, and theyyam performed in village shrines from December to April.
North Kerala barely registers on the tourist map, which is why Bekal fort sits on a headland with almost nobody in it. The real reason to come between December and April is theyyam — a ritual performance in which a dancer becomes the deity, staged overnight in village shrines, free to attend, and unlike anything else in India. Ask locally; it is not on any schedule you will find online.
Instead of Kovalam or Varkala. Best for solo travellers, couples and families. Best months: Jan–Mar, Oct–Dec.
When to go
November to March. Theyyam season runs roughly December to April. June to September is heavy monsoon and most of the coast shuts down.

Theyyam is a religious ritual, not a show. Photography is often restricted and always requires asking. Dress modestly and do not obstruct.
North Kerala beaches have no lifeguards and strong currents.
Very little English is spoken inland. A homestay host who can translate changes the trip entirely.
How to do it cheaper:
Theyyam is free to attend and is the best reason to visit anywhere in Kerala between December and April.
The coast road bus at ₹25 reaches every beach and fort. Nobody hires a car here.
Valiyaparamba is Alleppey without the houseboats, at a fifth of the price.
