Kovalam & Poovar
A lighthouse beach with the original Kerala beach-tourism infrastructure, and a backwater-meets-the-sea island twenty minutes south that most visitors never reach.

Kovalam was Kerala's first beach resort town, and it shows in both directions: good infrastructure, and a well-trodden main beach. The fix is the same as everywhere else on this coast — go a little further. Poovar, twenty minutes south, is where a backwater estuary opens into the sea, with a golden sandbar between fresh and salt water, and a fraction of Kovalam's crowd. The airport is minutes away, which makes this an easy add-on to any Kerala trip.

When to go
November to February is the best swimming weather. March to May is hot. The monsoon brings strong currents and rip tides — swim only at lifeguarded beaches and heed the flags.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Rip currents are a real hazard, especially in the monsoon. Swim only where a lifeguard flag is posted.
Fix the price with the fisherman or boatman before you get in the water or the boat — this stretch has persistent overcharging of tourists.
Ayurveda 'centres' vary wildly in quality; ask about qualifications before a treatment.
How to do it cheaper:
Go to Poovar for the day rather than paying for an overnight floating cottage — the boat ride and sandbar are the point.
Stay a street back from the cliff path and the room rate drops sharply for the same beach access.
The airport is 16 km away, so Kovalam works as a first or last night on any Kerala trip.
