Poovar is a fishing village at Kerala's southern tip, 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram, where the Neyyar river runs into the sea. Between the backwater and the waves is a strip of golden sand you can only reach by boat, and the boat ride there, through mangroves full of herons and kingfishers, is half the point. There are no beach shacks in a row and no hawker strip like Kovalam's. One or two nights is enough; it also works as a long day trip from the city.

Why Poovar, instead of Kovalam: A golden sandbar where the Neyyar river meets the Arabian Sea, reached only by boat through mangrove backwaters.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Boat prices vary wildly. The backwater association rate is ₹2,500 for two for an hour; agree price, duration and stops before you board.
  • The estuary and sea are dangerous for swimming. Paddle, do not swim, and stay out entirely in the monsoon.
  • June to August boats can stop running to the beach when the sea is rough. Keep a spare day if the beach is the point.

Ways to spend less

  • Take the ₹47 KSRTC bus from Thampanoor instead of a taxi; it drops you in Poovar town near the jetties.
  • Go at 7 am. Calm water, herons in the mangroves, and the sandbar to yourself.
  • Two people can split one private boat. A family of four on one boat pays the base rate plus ₹500 per extra person.
