Guruvayur & the Krishna temples
Guruvayur's Krishna temple is one of the most important Vaishnavite shrines in South India, famous for its elephant sanctuary at nearby Punnathur Kotta and a strict dress code that visitors should know before arriving. A short loop takes in Guruvayur itself, the Thrissur temples and the beach town of Chavakkad.

Where to stay
Guruvayur has temple-run lodges and ordinary hotels across every budget, all within walking distance of the shrine. Thrissur is a good alternative base with more variety.
Food
Guruvayur's temple-town meals houses serve unlimited vegetarian meals for modest prices. Try the payasam (a temple sweet) sold near the entrance.
Local tip: See the elephants at Punnathur Kotta in the early morning, before the day gets hot and busy, then do the temple in the late afternoon.
