A rainforest that survived a 1970s dam controversy and stayed wild enough to be one of the last habitats of the lion-tailed macaque — seen only on a strictly limited forest department visit.

Silent Valley is one of the last substantial patches of undisturbed tropical evergreen rainforest in India, saved from a hydroelectric dam project in the 1970s and 80s by one of the country's earliest and most successful environmental movements. It is not a place you wander freely — access is tightly controlled by the forest department to protect the ecosystem, including one of the last strongholds of the lion-tailed macaque. What you get in exchange is a genuinely undisturbed forest, not a manicured 'eco-tourism' version of one.

When to go
December to April is the visiting season the forest department typically allows; the park can close entirely during the peak monsoon. Confirm current opening dates and entry procedures directly with the forest department before planning a trip.

Even without a permit, the Mukkali interpretation centre and buffer-zone birdwatching are worth the trip on their own.
