Kotagiri is the quiet side of the Nilgiris: a working tea town on the eastern slope, reached by its own ghat road from Mettupalayam. There is no lake, no boating and no crowd. You come to walk between tea estates, look down the cliff at Kodanad, see Catherine Falls and Longwood Shola, and sleep cold. Two or three nights is right; Coimbatore is the gateway.

Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- Gaur and elephants use the estates and shola. Keep your distance and do not walk estate roads after dark.
- Only taxis run after 8 pm. Plan the last bus back from Kodanad or the falls.
- The ghat road from Mettupalayam is all hairpins. Take something for motion sickness if you need it.
Ways to spend less
- Take the ₹10 MEMU from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam and the bus up. Cheaper and calmer than fighting for a seat on the direct bus.
- Come back down by the Nilgiri toy train from Coonoor to Mettupalayam. Unreserved tickets cost very little.
- Kodanad at sunrise, before the mist rises from the valley, is the best view in the Nilgiris.
