Kabini sits on the backwaters of the Kabini reservoir, bordering Nagarhole (Rajiv Gandhi) National Park, one of South India's best wildlife reserves. What sets it apart from a standard tiger-reserve stay is the water: in the dry season, elephant herds, gaur and deer come right down to the reservoir's edge, visible from a boat safari as well as the usual jeep drives — a calmer, often more rewarding way to see wildlife than a dusty jeep convoy.
The calmer, water-based side of Karnataka's tiger country. Best for couples, groups and families. Best months: Jan–Apr, Sep–Dec.
When to go
February to May is best for sightings, as animals concentrate around the shrinking waterline in the dry heat — despite the temperature, this is peak wildlife season here. June to September, the reservoir is full and green but sightings are more scattered through the thicker forest.
