Masinagudi is the small forest town at the base of the Nilgiris, where the Mudumalai, Bandipur and Wayanad reserves meet. You see elephants, gaur and deer from the bus. The forest department runs cheap safaris from Theppakadu, where the elephant camp became famous after the Oscar-winning documentary The Elephant Whisperers. Stay in a small jungle lodge, not Ooty, and the Nilgiris' wildlife is on your doorstep.

When to go
October to May is good. The forest is dry and animals are easier to see around water from March to May. Heavy monsoon rains close some roads and safaris. Theppakadu is often shut during forest fire risk or animal census.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
The Bandipur–Mudumalai road through Karnataka is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am. Do not plan to drive through at night.
Never walk after dark, and never stop to photograph elephants on the road or get out of the car.
Only forest department safaris enter the core forest. 'Jungle safaris' sold by resorts cover the buffer zone and public roads.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay near Bokkapuram and use the forest safari. You will see as much wildlife for a fraction of the private price.
Queue at the Theppakadu reception at 6:30 am for the first safari.
Take the Kalhatti ghat up to Ooty and the Gudalur road down, and you get both sides of the Nilgiris.
