Kumarakom

Alleppey's houseboat jetty is now so busy in season that boats queue to leave. Kumarakom sits on the same Vembanad Lake, twenty minutes from Kottayam, with the bird sanctuary, quieter backwater stretches and fewer boats overall. A day houseboat or a canoe through the narrow village canals shows you the same paddy-below-sea-level landscape without the overnight package price.
Instead of the Alleppey houseboat queue. Best for couples, groups and families. Best months: Jan–Apr, Sep–Dec.
When to go
November to February is coolest and clearest. The bird sanctuary is best from November to February, when migratory birds arrive. March to May is hot and humid; June to September is the monsoon, when the backwaters are fullest and greenest but houseboats move more carefully.

The bird sanctuary is quieter and the birds more active in the first two hours after sunrise.
