Chidambaram's Nataraja Temple is one of the most important Shiva shrines in India. It is the 'space' temple of the Pancha Bhoota five, and the only major temple where Shiva is worshipped as the dancer. The gopurams carry all 108 poses of classical dance. Most pilgrims come for darshan and leave. Stay the night, and in the morning row through Pichavaram, one of the largest mangrove forests in India, where narrow channels close overhead like tunnels.
With a mangrove forest most pilgrims never see. Works for everyone. Best months: Jan–Apr, Sep–Dec.
When to go
November to February is cool enough. Natyanjali, the dance festival held around Maha Shivaratri (February–March), is wonderful. Arudra Darshan (December–January) and Aani Thirumanjanam (June–July) bring huge crowds. April and May are very hot.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
The Nataraja Temple has its own rules. Some inner areas and rituals are restricted, and photography is limited. Ask before you shoot.
Festival days (Arudra Darshan, Aani Thirumanjanam) are overwhelming. Book early or avoid them.
Motorboats at Pichavaram are faster but cannot enter the small channels.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay near the temple, and the morning ritual is a five-minute walk.
Take a rowing boat at Pichavaram early in the morning, when the birds are out.
Combine it with the Navagraha circuit or Gangaikonda Cholapuram — both are close.
