Melkote
A rocky hill temple town associated with the philosopher-saint Ramanujacharya, with a sacred tank, a fort-like temple complex, and views over the Cauvery plains that almost no one outside Karnataka has heard of.

Melkote (Thirunarayanapuram) is a small hilltop town built around the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, closely associated with the 11th-century philosopher Ramanujacharya, who is said to have lived here for years while developing his Vishishtadvaita philosophy. The temple complex, the sacred Kalyani tank, and the granite hill it all sits on give Melkote a genuinely different atmosphere from Karnataka's larger, more commercial pilgrimage towns — quiet, scholarly, and largely undiscovered by outside visitors.
A hilltop Vaishnavite town that Ramanujacharya himself lived in. Best for solo travellers. Best months: Jan–Mar, Aug–Dec.
When to go
October to February is most comfortable. The Vairamudi festival (typically March–April) is Melkote's biggest event, when the temple deity is adorned with a diamond crown — spectacular but very crowded.
