Bandipur was a busy stop on the India-Tibet trade route until the Prithvi Highway was built down in the valley in the 1970s and left it stranded. That is why its brick-and-shutter Newar bazaar survived almost untouched. Today the main street is closed to cars, the guesthouses are old merchant houses, and short walks lead to temples, viewpoints and Magar villages. It sits halfway between Kathmandu and Pokhara, so it fits neatly into the classic route as a two-night stop.

Mistakes to avoid
- The UK FCDO (1 Oct 2026) warns that flood- and landslide-hit areas may stay unstable; Dhading, which the Kathmandu-Dumre highway crosses, was affected in August 2026. Check the road before you travel.
- Dumre is a quick roadside stop. Tell the bus conductor early or you will end up in Pokhara.
- The shared jeeps stop around dusk. Arriving late means a negotiated taxi.
Ways to spend less
- Break the Kathmandu-Pokhara bus ride here instead of doing it in one day. Same road, one extra short ticket.
- Get up for Thani Mai at dawn: from October to March the Himalaya is usually clearest before the haze builds.
- Walk the bazaar after the day-trippers' cars leave in the late afternoon; the street is yours.
