Everyone chasing Everest Base Camp signs up for a 12-day trail, altitude risk, and a queue at Base Camp itself. Pokhara gives you the same Himalayan payoff — sunrise over 8,000m peaks, a glacier-fed lake, real Annapurna foothill trails — in day-hikes anyone can do, no permits booked months out. It's also the easiest international trip an Indian traveller can take: no visa, an open land border, and a direct flight from Delhi shorter than Delhi-Chennai.

Instead of the Everest Base Camp trek crowd. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Jan–May, Sep–Dec.

When to go

October-November and March-April give the clearest Annapurna views; June-August monsoon brings rain, cloud cover and leeches on the trails.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper

What goes wrong:

No visa needed, but check the current land-border ID rules before you go — an original Voter ID card or passport is what checkposts accept; photocopies, Aadhaar and driving licences are commonly turned away

The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is required for the foothill day-hikes — buy it in Pokhara before setting out; the older TIMS card requirement has reportedly been dropped but confirm at the tourism board counter

Even short day-hikes like Australian Camp climb past 2,000m — go slow, carry water and a layer, and skip the sunrise trek if you're feeling breathless

How to do it cheaper:

Skip the taxi queue at Sarangkot — a shared jeep from Lakeside costs a fraction of a private cab and leaves every 15-20 minutes before dawn

Book a Lakeside guesthouse a street back from the main strip — same lake and mountain views from the roof, half the price

The last two weeks of April get you nearly the same clear skies as peak October-November, at lower season rates

Money & connectivity

Notes
CashNepali Rupees (NPR) only for local spends — Indian notes above ₹100 aren't legally accepted, though small shops sometimes take ₹10/₹20/₹50 informally
Card & UPICards work at Lakeside hotels and bigger restaurants; carry cash for trailheads, buses and local stalls
Mobile signalNcell or NTC tourist SIM, roughly NPR 500-1000 for a data pack, available at the airport or Lakeside shops with passport/Voter ID
ATMsPlenty of ATMs in Lakeside, but Nepali banks cap withdrawals (often NPR 10,000-35,000 per transaction) and charge a fee — withdraw fewer, larger amounts
