Ella & the Uva Highlands

Most first-time visitors give hill country one stop — Kandy, a temple, a lake, back on the bus to the beach. Ella is the same cool, tea-scented highlands but built for slowing down: a small trekking town on a train line, with two easy peaks, a famous bridge and tea estates you walk through rather than photograph from a bus window. It's a short flight from South India and a scenic train ride inland, not a whole separate trip.
Instead of squeezing hill country into a rushed one-night Kandy stopover on the standard Colombo-Kandy-Galle tourist run. Best for solo travellers and couples. Best months: Jan–Sep, Dec.
When to go
January-March and July-September are driest and clearest for hiking; October-November brings the heaviest rain and cloud cover.

Sri Lankan food is genuinely vegetarian-friendly — a rice-and-curry plate always comes with several veg sides (dhal, jackfruit, beans, pumpkin) and pure-veg meals are easy to find; just double-check sambols, since dried fish sometimes goes in.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Sri Lanka's ETA process for Indian passport holders has changed more than once recently — check the current rules and fees directly on the official eta.gov.lk portal before booking, and avoid third-party sites that add charges
Reserved seats on the Kandy-Ella train sell out weeks ahead in peak season (Dec-Mar) — book online early or be ready to stand in an unreserved carriage
Stay off the railway tracks except at designated safe viewing spots near Nine Arch Bridge — there have been tourist injuries from lingering on the tracks for photos
How to do it cheaper:
Skip the crowded photo spot directly below Nine Arch Bridge — walk 10 minutes further along the tracks for the same view with far fewer people
The 8:47am Kandy-Ella train gets swarmed by tour groups; a later departure is just as scenic and much calmer
Guesthouses on the Passara Road side of town cost less than ones on the main tourist strip but are only a 10-minute walk from everything
