Short answer
About ₹5,000 per person for two days from Chennai with overnight trains both ways, a lodge near the temple and banana-leaf meals. A family of four pays about ₹4,500 each. On a shoestring it is about ₹4,000. Darshan is free. Three days is about ₹6,300.
For two years Rameswaram had no trains: the old Pamban rail bridge closed for corrosion in December 2022, and pilgrims changed to buses at Mandapam. The new vertical-lift bridge opened on 6 April 2025 and trains run to the island again. That makes this one of the cheapest pilgrimages in India to do well, because a bed near the temple and a ₹25 local bus are most of what you need.

The temple: timings, the theertham bath and the phone rule

- Darshan timings (official site): 04:00–13:00 and 15:00–20:00. The same page says evening darshan starts at 15:15. General darshan is free.
- The 22 theertham bath (official site): bathing is allowed 05:30–12:30 and 15:00–19:00. A ticket is sold inside the temple. We could not confirm the current price from an official source, so bring small change.
- Special darshan: paid tickets exist, but we could not confirm the prices. Buy only at the temple counter, never from an agent.
- Phones: from 1 September 2026, Tamil Nadu's HR&CE department bans camera phones at 52 major temples, with a ₹5 deposit counter. Basic phones are allowed, per news reports. We could not confirm Rameswaram is on the list, but restrictions already applied here, so leave your smartphone at the lodge.
- Dress: no official rule is published on the temple site. Covered, traditional clothing is the norm, and wet clothes after the theertham bath are normal, so carry a change.
Where to stay
| Stay | Where | From (per night) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temple-side lodge | Rameswaram, near the east gate | ₹800 | Walkable to the temple, which saves you an auto four times a day. |
| Mid hotel | Rameswaram | ₹1,800 | AC matters more here than almost anywhere in India. |
Sleep within walking distance of the temple. You will go in and out several times, especially if you do the theertham bath, and every walk saves an auto.
Food
| What | Typical price | Notes |

| Jigarthanda, Madurai | ₹120 | Milk, almond gum, sarsaparilla and ice cream. Not optional. |
| Fresh fish, Rameswaram | ₹180 | Off the boats. Note the temple area itself is vegetarian. |

Month-by-month as text
Jan: Best · Feb: Best · Mar: Good · Apr: Passable · May: Avoid · Jun: Avoid · Jul: Passable · Aug: Passable · Sep: Good · Oct: Best · Nov: Best · Dec: Best
Trip Under's season scores. Tamil Nadu Tourism gives October to March as the best time.
October to December is the northeast monsoon and the Bay of Bengal's cyclone season, so trains, the Dhanushkodi road and boat rides can be disrupted. The most comfortable stretch is roughly December to February. April to June is fierce heat on an island with almost no shade, which is hard on older pilgrims.
How to do it for about ₹4,000
- Take sleeper class on an overnight train both ways. It saves two nights of beds.
- Stay at a temple-side lodge and walk everywhere on the island.
- Eat banana-leaf meals. A lunch is about ₹60 here.
- Use the local bus to Dhanushkodi. Taxis charge many times the bus fare for the same road.
- Skip paid darshan. The free queue moves, and early morning is quietest.
