Kudle Beach. Gokarna Road station is about 9.5 km inland.

Short answer

The nearest railway station to Gokarna is Gokarna Road (GOK) on the Konkan Railway, about 9.5 km from town by road (about 13 minutes). Only about ten trains stop there. Fast trains such as the Nethravathi and Mangaladweep skip it and stop at Kumta (KT), about 31 km away. From Bengaluru the only daily direct train is the overnight 16595 Panchaganga Express: KSR Bengaluru 18:50 to Gokarna Road 06:57, about ₹405 Sleeper, ₹1,070 3A, ₹1,515 2A. From Mumbai, the 12619 Matsyagandha costs about ₹505 Sleeper but reaches Gokarna Road at 02:42.

Gokarna is a temple town with a string of beaches you walk between on a cliff path. It is the quieter alternative to Goa, about three hours down the same coast. The train is the cheapest comfortable way in, if you know which station your train actually stops at.

How we worked it out. On 5 November 2026 we read the list of trains stopping at each station on erail, the lowest fare per class on ConfirmTkt's route listings for travel on 6 November (7 November for Pune, 8 November for Kochi), and re-ran road distances with OpenStreetMap routing from each station to Gokarna town. Fares change with the date and seats sell out, so check IRCTC before you book. You book every piece yourself: Trip Under is not an agency.

Gokarna Road or Kumta?

From Bengaluru, Mumbai, Goa, Mangaluru or Pune, take a train that stops at Gokarna Road: the Panchaganga, the Matsyagandha, the Karwar Express or the Poorna. From Kerala, the daily Nethravathi skips Gokarna Road, so get off at Kumta and take a bus or taxi the last 31 km, or use the Sunday-only Marusagar, which stops at Gokarna Road. Always check that your train actually stops where you think it does: Konkan Railway expresses skip the small stations.

For budgeting, Trip Under plans the Bengaluru train at about ₹1,000 per person each way. Here is how it compares with the bus and flying:

Bus, mid-range₹6,400

One person from Bengaluru, return travel plus two days on the ground at Trip Under's Gokarna daily rates (₹800 shoestring, ₹1,400 mid-range).

The overnight train in 3A costs about the same as a sleeper bus (about ₹1,800 each way in our plan) and you arrive after a proper night's sleep.

The last leg: Gokarna Road to the beaches

Autos wait outside Gokarna Road for each train. Travel guides put the ride into town at about ₹200–350, 15 to 20 minutes; we could not find an official or dated fare, so agree the price before you get in. Ask to be dropped at the Kudle beach car park if you are staying on the beaches. Buses between Kumta, Ankola and Gokarna pass near the station but run rarely, and we could not confirm a timetable.

Coming in at Kumta, local buses and taxis run to Gokarna, about 31 km and 32 minutes by road. Bus fares on aggregator pages vary, and we could not confirm the KSRTC fare.

Arriving at 02:42 on the Matsyagandha? Book your first night so you can check in on arrival, or wait at the station until first light. The cliff path between beaches is not a walk to do in the dark.
