The Ghataprabha river folds into a horseshoe shape uncannily like Niagara Falls, right beside one of India's oldest hydroelectric-powered textile mills.

Gokak Falls, in Karnataka's northern Belagavi district, is often compared to Niagara for its horseshoe shape, though at a much smaller scale. What makes it unusual is the neighbour: a 19th-century cotton mill built to use the falls' hydroelectric power, among the earliest such installations in India, and a suspension bridge across the gorge that adds its own thrill. It's a straightforward, low-cost day trip rather than a multi-day destination.

When to go
July to October, during and just after the monsoon, is when the falls run fullest and most dramatic. In peak summer (March–May) flow can be reduced, especially upstream of the dam.

The suspension bridge sways noticeably — not recommended for anyone uneasy with heights or unsteady footing.
