Dandeli grew up around a paper mill on the Kali river, in the middle of dense Western Ghats forest, and only in the last couple of decades turned into an adventure-tourism base — white-water rafting, kayaking, and wildlife safaris in the surrounding Dandeli-Anshi Tiger Reserve, known for its hornbill population and occasional black panther sightings. It has a working-town feel rather than a resort-strip one, which keeps it grounded and affordable.

When to go
Rafting season runs roughly June to September/October when the Kali river has good monsoon-fed flow, though very heavy flood conditions can pause it — check current operator advisories. Wildlife safaris are better in the drier months, October to April.
