A single-track clifftop path that local fishermen used to reach beaches and fishing spots, always within sight of the Atlantic. The full trail is 226.5 km in 13 one-day stages (none longer than 22.5 km) from the Alentejo to Lagos. The classic 4-day northern section runs Porto Covo to Vila Nova de Milfontes (about 19-20 km), Almograve (about 15-16 km), Zambujeira do Mar (about 22 km, past the storks nesting on the Cabo Sardão sea stacks) and Odeceixe (about 19 km). The official rating is 'somewhat difficult' because 60-70% of the path is soft sand; it is not recommended for anyone with vertigo, as the cliffs are eroding. Every stage ends in a village with rooms and restaurants, so no camping gear is needed. Our cost is per person for 4 nights and days on the ground at about €45 a day (budget room plus food, per a 2026 hiking guide) plus buses from and back to Lisbon.
