Cádiz has the Andalusian old town, tapas bars and plazas people go to Seville for, but it sits on the ocean, so you get beaches and a sea breeze instead of inland summer heat. The old town is small and flat enough to cross on foot, and La Caleta beach, the cathedral and the seafront promenade are minutes apart. Fly into Jerez and take the train, or ride the train down from Seville in under two hours. Walk everywhere, eat the lunch menu as your main meal, and spend the afternoons on the beach, which is free.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 28 Oct 2026) warns of pickpockets and bag thieves working in teams with distraction tactics, especially at airports. It also reported a high-speed rail collision near Toledo on 28 Oct 2026 with significant rail disruption, so check Renfe before travel days.
- On the Atlantic beaches, check the flag before swimming: a red flag means you must not enter the water, and there can be strong undercurrents.
- In summer, heat warnings and wildfires are common in Spain. Check AEMET warnings, and starting a fire, even by accident, is a crime.
Ways to spend less
- The beaches, the sea walls and the castles at La Caleta cost nothing.
- The Jerez airport train costs about €4-6, far less than a taxi.
- A set lunch menu (about $15.50) is the best-value meal of the day; keep dinner to a few tapas.
