Girona gives you the Catalan old town, food and Gothic stone people go to Barcelona for, in a city small enough to cross on foot and far calmer at night. The Barri Vell, the old Jewish quarter, the cathedral and the river houses are all within a few minutes of each other, and the city wall walk is open from early morning to late evening. Fly into Girona-Costa Brava, about 12 km out, or into Barcelona and take the train, which takes from about 40 minutes. Sleep in a dorm or a simple hotel and make the set lunch menu your main meal. Two days covers the city; add a day for Figueres or the coast.

Why Girona, instead of Barcelona: Coloured houses hanging over the Onyar river, a walled medieval quarter you can walk on top of, and a cathedral with one of the widest Gothic naves in the world.

Step 9 of 11Next: Tips

Know before you go

CashSpain uses the euro. Keep coins and small notes for city buses, which sell tickets from the driver.
Cards & UPICards and contactless are widely taken in restaurants, hotels and shops.
Phone signalSpain is in the EU, so EU SIMs roam at home rates. Others can buy a local prepaid SIM with a passport.

Mistakes to avoid

  • UK travel advice (updated 28 Oct 2026) warns of pickpockets and bag thieves working in teams with distraction tactics, especially at airports. It also reported a high-speed rail collision near Toledo on 28 Oct 2026 with significant rail disruption, so check Renfe before travel days.
  • Summer heat and wildfires are common in Spain. Check AEMET warnings before hikes or trips into the countryside; starting a fire, even by accident, is a crime.
  • The old town is built on a hillside with long, uneven stone stairs, including the cathedral steps and the wall walk. Not easy with a pushchair or limited mobility.

Ways to spend less

  • The wall walk, the Jewish quarter and the river views cost nothing.
  • One €7.50 ticket covers both the cathedral and Sant Feliu, and stays valid for a year.
  • The Arab Baths are only €3, and €1 for students and pensioners.
