Pécs gives you the layered history and grand squares people go to Budapest for, in a warm southern city small enough to walk. The UNESCO-listed early Christian burial chambers, the cathedral and the former Pasha Qasim mosque are all within a few hundred metres, and the Zsolnay Quarter is a separate half-day just outside the centre. Fly into Budapest and take the Mecsek InterCity from Kelenföld, about two and a half hours. Two days covers the city; add a third for Villány wine country or the Orfű lakes.
