Szeged has the Art Nouveau facades, thermal baths and river promenades people go to Budapest for, without the crowds or the tourist-trap bars. Rebuilt in style after the great flood of 1879, its centre is compact: the Votive Church, Reök Palace, the New Synagogue and Széchenyi Square are all a few minutes apart. Take the hourly InterCity from Budapest (about 2.5 hours), which also stops at Ferihegy station near the airport. Walk everywhere, use a 470 Ft tram ticket when you must, and pick the combined cathedral ticket to see the tower, exhibition and Dömötör Tower for 3,400 Ft.

Why Szeged, instead of Budapest: Hungary's sunny university city on the Tisza: a twin-spired cathedral, Art Nouveau palaces and one of Europe's grandest synagogues, at small-town prices.

  • Track works on the Budapest-Szeged line in November 2026 add a few minutes to the journey. Check the MÁV timetable on the day.

Ways to spend less

  • The 3,400 Ft combined cathedral ticket covers the tower, exhibition and Dömötör Tower, saving 1,100 Ft on separate tickets.
  • The synagogue's garden and hall of martyrs, Széchenyi Square and the river walk are free.
  • Go to the Aquapolis spa on a weekday: 5,700 Ft instead of 9,500 Ft at weekends.
