Novi Sad gives you the Danube, the fortress and the cafe life people go to Belgrade for, in a smaller and calmer city. Petrovaradin Fortress, the old town around Freedom Square and the river beach are all walkable, and the paid sights cost a few hundred dinars. Fly into Belgrade, take the free city bus 600 to Beograd Centar, then the Soko fast train for about ₹620. Two days covers the city; add a third for Sremski Karlovci and the Fruška Gora monasteries.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 22 Oct 2026) warns of protests in Belgrade and other cities that can start at short notice and disrupt transport, around the 25 October parliamentary elections. Avoid demonstrations.
- You must be registered with the police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this at check-in; with a private rental, make sure the host does it.
- Novi Sad's main railway station was closed after the canopy collapse of 1 November 2024 and trains used Petrovaradin. Reports in October 2026 say service is moving back to the main station. Check which station your train uses.
Ways to spend less
- The Gallery of Matica Srpska is free for everyone on Fridays.
- Belgrade's bus 600 from the airport to the train station is free, so the whole airport-to-Novi Sad trip costs about ₹620 by Soko.
- The fortress grounds, the old town and Štrand beach cost nothing.
