Cluj gives you a walkable old centre, a lively café and student scene and easy day trips, without Bucharest's traffic and sprawl. St Michael's Church, Union Square, Central Park and the Cetățuia viewpoint are all free and within a short walk of each other. Fly straight into Cluj airport and ride the A1 bus into town for 3.5 lei, or take the train or a FlixBus from Bucharest. Eat the daily lunch menu (meniul zilei) for around 26-35 lei and spend the savings on Salina Turda, the underground salt mine at Turda, south of the city.

- UK travel advice says taxi drivers sometimes overcharge visitors and that drink spiking happens in bars and clubs. Use Bolt or Uber or a marked taxi with its price list on the door.
- Several prices here could not be confirmed for 2026 (the Bucharest train fare in particular). Check the price before you pay.
Ways to spend less
- The A1 airport bus costs the same 3.5 lei as any city ride.

- The old centre, Cetățuia hill and Central Park cost nothing, and the weekday daily menu keeps lunch around 30 lei.
