Graz gives you Vienna's Habsburg architecture, café culture and museums in a compact, walkable centre with far smaller crowds. The Schlossberg and its Clock Tower, the old town around the Hauptplatz, the Murinsel and the Kunsthaus are all within a few minutes of each other, and climbing the castle hill on foot is free. Fly into Vienna and take a FlixBus straight from the airport, or fly into Graz's own airport and ride the S1 train to the main station in about 13 minutes. A €7.20 day ticket covers the city's trams and buses, and one €20 Joanneum ticket gets you into the Armoury, Kunsthaus and Eggenberg Palace museums for 24 hours.

Why Graz, instead of Vienna: Austria's second city: a clock tower on a castle hill, a UNESCO-listed old town and a blue 'friendly alien' art museum on the river, for less than Vienna.

Mistakes to avoid

  • UK travel advice (updated 11 Aug 2026) says terrorist attacks in Austria are likely and could target transport hubs, events and nightlife; recent attacks include a 2025 knife attack in Villach. Stay alert in crowds, including at Christmas markets.
  • Pickpocketing is more common at main stations, on international trains and in city parks after dark. UK advice also warns of drink spiking used to rob people.
  • For hikes in the Styrian hills, check the weather, carry a map and phone, and tell someone your route. Summer thunderstorms are common.

Ways to spend less

  • Walking up the Schlossberg steps is free and gives the best view in the city.
  • One €20 Joanneum ticket covers the Armoury, Kunsthaus and Eggenberg museums for 24 hours.
  • A €7.20 day ticket costs less than three single rides at €3.30.
