Olomouc has the squares, spires and astronomical clock people queue for in Prague, at lower prices and without the tour-group crush. The Holy Trinity Column on the Upper Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the six Baroque fountains are free to walk between, and the Archdiocesan Museum and cathedral sit on the old castle hill. It is about 2 h 10 m from Prague by train, with three competing operators and fares from about CZK 224 in listings. Two days is enough; add a day for Kroměříž's UNESCO-listed gardens or Bouzov Castle.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 11 Aug 2026): carrying ID is a legal requirement in Czechia, so always carry your passport. Police may fine or detain you without it.
- Beware of people posing as plainclothes police who ask to see your money or passport, and of drink spiking in bars. Use a major taxi company and check the rates on the car.
- The Holy Trinity Column is under restoration until the end of 2026 and the Town Hall tower has limited access in 2026. Check with the information centre in the Town Hall before you plan around them.
Ways to spend less
- The UNESCO column, the six Baroque fountains and the astronomical clock cost nothing to see.
- The Museum of Modern Art's permanent exhibitions are free on the first Sunday of each month.
- Three rail operators compete on the Prague line, so booking early can bring the fare down to about CZK 224.
