Lublin gives you the Polish history trip people take Warsaw for, in a smaller and cheaper city where the main sights are a short walk apart. The castle's Holy Trinity Chapel holds frescoes finished in 1418 by a Ruthenian painter, the Old Town is a protected national monument, and the Majdanek memorial museum is free to enter. Fly into Lublin airport or Warsaw, then take a direct train (from about 62 zł, under two hours) or a bus from about $6. Two days covers the city; add a day for Kazimierz Dolny or the UNESCO-listed town of Zamość.

Why Lublin, instead of Warsaw: A walkable old town, a royal castle chapel covered in 1418 Ruthenian frescoes and the free Majdanek memorial, two hours from Warsaw by train.

Know before you go

CashPoland uses the złoty (zł, PLN), not the euro. Keep some small notes and coins.
Cards & UPICards and phone payments are widely accepted in shops, restaurants and transport apps.
Phone signalPoland is in the EU, so EU SIMs roam at home rates. Others can buy a local prepaid SIM in Lublin or Warsaw.

Mistakes to avoid

  • UK travel advice (updated 11 Aug 2026): drinking alcohol in public places is illegal in Poland, and you must always carry ID (a printed copy of your passport photo page is accepted).
  • Lublin is in eastern Poland. Access to the land borders with Ukraine and Belarus is restricted, and some Russian strikes in Ukraine have hit within 20 km of the Polish border. Do not plan side trips to the border.
  • Unofficial taxi drivers often overcharge, and passengers have been attacked in unofficial taxis and ride-share cars. Use a marked taxi with the company name and a rate card.

Ways to spend less

  • Majdanek State Museum is free, including all its exhibitions.
  • The National Museum in Lublin sets free-entry days each month (in November 2026: 3, 10, 19 and 25).
  • The bus from Warsaw starts at about $6, less than half the cheapest direct train fare.
