Gdańsk gives you the restored old town and heavy 20th-century history people go to Kraków for, with the Baltic sea on the doorstep. The Main Town's Long Market, the riverside quays and the Main Town Hall are a short walk apart, and the European Solidarity Centre and the Museum of the Second World War are both within reach on foot or by tram. Fly straight into Gdańsk and take the city bus in for 4.80 zł. Two or three days covers the city; add a day for Malbork Castle or the beach at Sopot. Use the free days: the city museum's branches are free on Mondays and the WWII museum on Tuesdays.

Know before you go

CashPoland uses the złoty (zł, PLN), not the euro. Rate used here: €1 = 4.38 zł, so 1 zł is about ₹24.
Cards & UPICards and contactless are taken almost everywhere, including ticket machines. Check bar bills before paying by card at the end of a night out.
Phone signalPoland is in the EU, so EU SIMs roam at home rates. Others can buy a local prepaid SIM with a passport.

Mistakes to avoid

  • UK travel advice (updated 11 Aug 2026) reports pickpocketing at main stations and on trains, drink spiking in bars and clubs, and visitors being overcharged on card at the end of a night out. Check your bill.
  • Drone incursions closed Polish airports temporarily in September 2025. Do not fly drones or take photos near military sites, and allow for short-notice flight disruption.
  • Several museums close one weekday: the city museum's branches on Tuesdays, the WWII museum's ticket offices on Mondays, and the Solidarity exhibition on Tuesdays from October to April. Plan the week around them.

Ways to spend less

  • Go on a Monday for the Main Town Hall, Artus Court and Uphagen House (normally 26 zł each), and on a Tuesday for the WWII museum (33 zł).
  • At the WWII museum, a last-minute ticket bought 30 minutes before the ticket office closes is 17 zł instead of 33 zł.
  • The airport bus is 4.80 zł, against about $10.70 for a short taxi ride.
