Coimbra has the steep lanes, river views and fado of Lisbon with a fraction of the visitors: in 2025 Lisbon logged about 19.6 million overnight stays, Coimbra about 0.3 million in a half year. The old university on the hill, with its Joanina library, is a UNESCO site and the reason most people come. Everything is on foot between the riverside Baixa and the Alta. Two days is right; add a morning at the Roman ruins of Conímbriga.
When to go
May, June and September are best: warm and mostly dry. July and August are dry and around 28°C but the students are gone and wildfire risk is high (April to October). November to January is the wettest stretch, with 110-120 mm of rain a month. Late May brings the Queima das Fitas student festival: lively, but rooms fill and prices rise.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 11 Aug 2026) flags a high wildfire risk across Portugal from April to October. Check the IPMA fire forecast before trips into the hills.
- Trains stop at Coimbra-B, not in the centre. Allow time for the shuttle or Metrobus, and check which is running.
- Late May (Queima das Fitas student festival) fills every bed. Book well ahead or avoid those dates.
Ways to spend less
- Book CP Intercidades a week or so ahead for a promo fare well under the €22.20 full price.
- The €5 one-day ticket covers buses, Metro Mondego and CP trains inside Coimbra.
- Under 25 or over 65? National museums like Machado de Castro and Conímbriga are half price.
