Tangier gives you the medina, souks and old palaces people go to Marrakech for, with sea air instead of desert heat and far fewer tour groups. The Kasbah, the Grand Socco and the old American Legation are all a short walk apart, and most museum tickets cost 20-30 dirhams. Fly into Tangier and take the 40-dirham airport bus, or ride the Al Boraq high-speed train from Casablanca in just over two hours. A dorm bed and three cheap meals keep a day under ₹3,000. Two days covers the city; add a third for Asilah or Chefchaouen.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 19 Aug 2026) has no area warnings for Tangier but says terrorist attacks are likely in Morocco, and that petty crime and scams are common in medinas and on beaches.
- People posing as official guides often target visitors in the medina. Use only guides with an official badge, and agree taxi fares or use the meter.
- Women travelling alone may get unwanted attention; UK advice suggests loose clothing that covers arms and legs. Morocco has zero tolerance for drugs, with long jail terms.
Ways to spend less
- The 30-dirham Kasbah combined ticket covers both the palace museum and the contemporary art space.
- The medina, Grand Socco, seafront and the Cafe Hafa views cost nothing but the price of a tea.
- Book the Al Boraq early: the same Casablanca train can cost 99 or 224 dirhams depending on demand.
Say it in Arabic
A few words go a long way, especially when you ask a price.
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) differs from standard Arabic, and French is widely used: bonjour, merci.
