Swakopmund is where Namibia's desert meets a cold, misty ocean. Most visitors rush past it on the way to the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei, five hours of gravel road away, and see one dune at dawn with a hundred others. Here the dunes start at the edge of town, and the Living Desert walk, the Sandwich Harbour dunes-into-sea drive and the Cape Cross seal colony are all morning or day trips. Come by shared shuttle from Windhoek or fly into Walvis Bay, and stay three or four nights.
When to go
Mild all year because of the cold Benguela current: average highs from about 20°C in July to 28°C in February. Expect morning fog in any month; it usually burns off by midday. Winter nights (June to August) are cold. A hot, sandy east wind can blow for days in late winter and spring. December and January are Namibian holiday season: busy and pricier, book ahead.

Mistakes to avoid
- Check your visa before booking. Since April 2025 Namibia requires visas from many more countries; the fee reported for non-African Union nationals is N$1,600. Use the official portal, eservices.mhaiss.gov.na.
- Roads: the UK FCDO says accidents are common on gravel roads, and not to drive outside towns after dark because of wildlife and livestock. Most day trips from here are on gravel.
- Park fees rose on 1 April 2026: N$280 per foreign adult per day for Dorob, Namib-Naukluft, Cape Cross and the Skeleton Coast, plus N$60 per car. Check which tours include them.
Ways to spend less
- Skip the dawn crush at Sossusvlei: Sandwich Harbour gives you bigger dunes, the sea and flamingos, with a fraction of the vehicles.
- Book the Living Desert tour for your first morning. It changes how you see every dune after.
- Take the 7:00 shuttle from Windhoek and you are on the jetty for sunset.
