Lushoto is the market town of the West Usambara Mountains, a cool, farmed range between Kilimanjaro and the coast. Most travellers rush past on the Dar–Moshi highway; the ones who turn off at Mombo get forest, waterfalls and village walks for a fraction of what Kilimanjaro costs. You base yourself in town or at Irente, walk to the viewpoints by day, and can carry on for three days on foot to Mtae, sleeping in village guesthouses. Give it three nights; six if you walk to Mtae.

Mistakes to avoid
- No UK FCDO 'advise against' area covers the Usambaras (Tanzania page updated 9 Oct 2026; the only listed area is near the Mozambique border). Normal precautions apply.
- March to May the trails turn to deep mud and some walks are not worth doing. Plan for June to October.
- Guides are not compulsory but are pushed hard. Agree price, route and what is included (entry fees, meals) before you leave, and book through the tourist centre or a known group.
Ways to spend less
- Irente Viewpoint costs under ₹70 and you can walk there from the bus stand.
- Village guesthouses on the Mtae walk cost ₹170-330 a night; the Rangwi convent includes three meals.
- Cool at 1,400 m all year: the escape when Moshi and Dar are hot.
