Stellenbosch gives you the Cape's mountains, wine and old Dutch architecture in a town small enough to walk, about 50 km from Cape Town. Dorp Street's oaks and whitewashed houses are free to wander, wine estates such as Spier run tastings from about R105, and Jonkershoek Nature Reserve has day hikes for an R80 fee. Fly into Cape Town and take a transfer of about 35 minutes. The town itself is not cheap, so save by staying in the backpacker lodge, eating at lunch spots and sharing transport to the estates. Two or three days is about right.

Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 4 Nov 2026) has no area warnings for the Western Cape, but says crime is high: keep to the M3 and N2 from Cape Town airport, avoid the R300 and GPS detours, and watch for carjacking at traffic lights after dark.
- UK advice says Metrorail trains and minibus taxis carry a higher risk of theft and violence, and that hikers in the Cape mountains should go in groups of four or more and finish before dark. Locals also advise against walking in town after dark.
- Power cuts are much less frequent than before but still happen and can knock out ATMs and traffic lights. Wildfires can occur in the dry summer, and UK advice expects rallies around the local government elections scheduled for 4 Nov 2026.
Ways to spend less
- Dorp Street, Die Braak and the oak-lined centre cost nothing to walk.
- Estate tastings start at about R105 for six wines at Spier, and the Vine Hopper means you need no car or driver.
- Jonkershoek's R80 fee gets you a full day of mountain hiking 9 km from town.
