Most people who go to Cape Verde fly to Sal or Boa Vista, which take over three-quarters of the country's hotel guests, and stay in a beach resort. São Vicente gets a fraction of that, and it is the country's cultural capital: Mindelo is Cesária Évora's home town, a colonial port of squares and pastel houses where live music starts late and runs on weekends. Use it as your base for the island's beaches and for day trips across the channel to hike Santo Antão. Four nights is right; fly in to São Vicente directly from Lisbon, or hop over from Sal or Praia.
When to go
December to April is driest and most comfortable, with highs around 26°C; March and April are quietest. August to October is the wetter, more humid season, though showers are usually short. Mindelo Carnival is in February (main parade on Shrove Tuesday, 9 February in 2027): book months ahead. The Baía das Gatas music festival is on a full-moon weekend in August.

Mistakes to avoid
- Paperwork first. Every visitor must pre-register on ease.gov.cv at least 5 days before arrival and pay the airport security fee (TSA, reported at 3,400 CVE); from 1 July 2026 you pay double at the border if you have not. Since 1 January 2026, nationals of 96 countries, India among them, need a visa from an embassy before travel; visa on arrival is gone for them.
- The UK FCDO says tides and currents around the islands are very strong. Swim only at beaches with a lifeguard, and follow the flags.
- Mindelo's centre is fine by day. After dark, take a taxi back, and avoid unlit streets and empty beaches. The FCDO says muggings are most common on Santiago, Sal and Boa Vista; São Vicente is not named.
Ways to spend less
- Plan Friday and Saturday nights in Mindelo. That is when the music is; weeknights are quiet.
- Do Santo Antão as two nights rather than a rushed day if you can: the first ferry and the last ferry leave little time on the trail.
- Pay the TSA on ease.gov.cv only. Intermediary sites charge double for the same form.

Possible but plain. Cachupa can be made without meat (ask for 'sem carne'), and beans, rice, maize, sweet potato and fruit are everywhere, but most dishes come with fish or pork. Mindelo's cafés have more choice than the villages; vegans should self-cater from the market.
Will my phone and cards work in São Vicente?
Buy a local SIM in Mindelo with your passport. Check current data prices in store. Hotels and the better restaurants take cards. Not the aluguers. The escudo (CVE) is pegged to the euro. Aluguers, local lunches and bars want cash.
