Mount Meru
Kilimanjaro runs 6-8+ days and USD 2,500+ in park fees alone; Meru is the classic 3-4 day acclimatization warm-up climbers do first, but it's a phenomenal, far cheaper summit in its own right through Arusha National Park's wildlife-filled forest, with a view straight across to Kilimanjaro.

How to reach it
Drive about 45-60 minutes from Arusha to Momella Gate, the Arusha National Park entrance, where mandatory ranger and guide sign-in happens before setting off through grassland grazed by buffalo and giraffe.
Permits
Licensed mountain guide and armed park ranger are legally mandatory inside Arusha National Park; park entry, hut/camping and rescue fees are bundled through a registered trekking operator — confirm TANAPA's current published tariff before booking.
Gear
Layered warm clothing for the pre-dawn summit push, sturdy boots, headlamp and poles; most Arusha/Moshi operators rent gear if needed.
