Salalah is the Gulf city that does not look like the Gulf. From late June to September the khareef monsoon wraps the Dhofar hills in mist and turns them green, and the whole of Oman drives south to see it. Outside the khareef it is a quiet coastal city of coconut palms, frankincense ruins and long beaches. You need a car or a hired driver: the sights are spread 30 to 80 km along the coast. Give it three or four days.

When to go
Two seasons. Khareef (roughly late June to September) is misty, green and cool, with waterfalls at Wadi Darbat; it is also peak season, when Gulf visitors fill the city and room prices roughly triple. October to March is dry, sunny and warm, the best beach weather and much cheaper. April to June is hot and humid, and the sea is rough once the monsoon starts.

Mistakes to avoid
- Regional conflict: the UK FCDO (updated 22 July 2026) reports Iranian strikes and retaliatory attacks in the region, including Oman, and warns of flight cancellations and airspace closures. It does not advise against travel to Salalah. The US rates Oman Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Check both before you book.
- Do not drive west towards the Yemen border beyond Rakhyut. The US advises against crossing the Oman-Yemen border, which is dangerous, and stay away from military areas.
- In khareef the hill roads are thick with fog and the sea is closed to swimming: strong currents kill people every year. Drive slowly and keep out of the water when the red flags are up.
Ways to spend less
- Go in September: the hills are still green, the big summer crowds have gone home, and prices start to fall.
- Outside khareef Salalah is one of the cheapest beach stays in the Gulf. October to March is warm, dry and quiet.
- Split a hire car four ways. Petrol is almost free and the car is the difference between seeing Dhofar and seeing your hotel.
