Liwa is where the real desert starts: a string of oasis villages on the northern edge of the Rub' al Khali, the largest unbroken sand sea on Earth. It is the ancestral home of Abu Dhabi's and Dubai's ruling families, and its date farms and mud forts still line the road. The main event is Moreeb Dune, about 22 km south of Mezaira'a, reached by a tarmac road, with a 50° slip face you can climb on foot at sunset. It is 250 km from Abu Dhabi, so you need a car and at least one night.

When to go
November to March only, realistically. Days are warm and nights are cold, so bring a jacket. The Liwa International Festival (dune racing, camel races, camping) runs from 11 December 2026 to early January 2027, which is fun but busy. In July the Liwa Date Festival fills Liwa city, but daytime heat is extreme. Avoid May to September for anything on the sand.

Check fareDaytime departures every few hours, on a Hafilat card. The fare isn't confirmed, and the onward bus from Madinat Zayed to Liwa isn't either. Check the DARB app.

Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- UK FCDO (updated 24 July 2026): Iranian strikes in the region since 8 July mean possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. Desert trips are dangerous unless in a properly equipped 4WD, with other cars, water and a phone.
- Never drive a hire car onto the sand, and never go off-road alone: always more than one 4x4 and recovery gear. Fill up in Mezaira'a before Moreeb.
- Summer is extreme here, well above 40°C. Climbing the dune in daytime heat from May to September is dangerous. Keep to dawn and dusk.
Ways to spend less
- Moreeb costs nothing. Hire a car, drive the tarmac road, and you get the view that Dubai desert-safari customers pay for, without the crowds.
- Stay one night in Mezaira'a. A day trip from Abu Dhabi is 5–6 hours of driving for a couple of hours on the sand.
- Visit in November or February rather than festival weeks: rooms are easier to get and the dunes are empty.

Buy a tourist SIM or eSIM at the airport. Signal is good in the villages and can drop in the open dunes. Hotels, ADNOC stations and the supermarket take cards. UAE dirham (AED). Carry some cash for the small restaurants and petrol-station cafeterias.
