Al Ain is the UAE's garden city: an inland town of date-palm oases and low mud-brick forts, about two hours by bus from Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Its oases, the Hili tombs and the Jebel Hafeet tombs are part of the UNESCO Cultural Sites of Al Ain, and most of them are free to enter. Buses get you into town cheaply, but Jebel Hafeet and the outlying sites need a taxi or a hire car. Give it two nights: one for the oasis and forts, one for the mountain at sunset.

Why Al Ain, instead of Abu Dhabi city: A palm-shaded oasis city on the Oman border, with mud-brick forts, 5,000-year-old tombs and a mountain road built for sunsets.

When to go

November to March is the season: warm days, cool evenings, and the best months for Jebel Hafeet. April and October are hot but workable early and late. May to September is 40°C+ inland, and Al Ain is hotter than the coast; the zoo even closes for summer (29 June to 4 September in 2026). During Ramadan (dates set by the moon) daytime eating in public is off limits and hours change.

CashUAE dirham (AED). Keep small notes for cafeterias and the camel market.
Cards & UPICards and phone pay work almost everywhere, including Abu Dhabi taxis.
Phone signalTourist SIMs and eSIMs from the two national operators are sold at the airports. Coverage is good, including up Jebel Hafeet.

Mistakes to avoid

  • UK FCDO (updated 24 July 2026): Iranian strikes in the region since 8 July mean possible flight cancellations and short-notice airspace closures. Follow shelter advice if issued.
  • From May to September Al Ain is above 40°C. Do the oasis and forts before 10 am and carry water; never hike Jebel Hafeet in the midday heat.
  • In Ramadan, no eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight, including in your car. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) at forts and museums, and do not photograph people without asking.

Ways to spend less

  • Most of Al Ain is free: the oasis, Al Jahili Fort, Qasr Al Muwaiji, Hili park and the Jebel Hafeet road cost nothing.
  • Take the AED 25 bus in and hire a car only for the one mountain day. You save the second day's hire and the parking.
  • Eat where the drivers eat: AED 20 thalis and AED 1 karak, not hotel buffets.
