Mleiha is Sharjah's desert interior, about 75 km east of Dubai. The nearby Faya Palaeolandscape became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2025 for one of the oldest records of humans living in a desert. The Mleiha Archaeological Centre is built around a 4,500-year-old Umm an-Nar tomb, runs the tours, and is where everything starts. Fossil Rock and Camel Rock rise out of the dunes next door. It works as a long day trip by hire car, or one night if you camp for the stars.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK FCDO (updated 24 July 2026): Iranian strikes in the region since 8 July mean possible flight cancellations and short-notice airspace closures. Follow shelter advice if issued.
- Sharjah is stricter than Dubai: drinking or possessing alcohol is illegal in the emirate. Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, and in Ramadan do not eat or drink in public in daylight.
- Desert trips are dangerous without a properly equipped 4WD and another car. Never take a hire car onto the sand, and do not hike Fossil Rock in summer heat.
Ways to spend less
- A AED 25 museum ticket and a free dawn hike up Fossil Rock make a cheap day. The tours are extra, not essential.
- The overnight camp (about AED 300) includes the stargazing and the sunrise 4x4 drive, so it costs less than booking them one by one.
- Stay in Sharjah on weeknights. The average room is less than half the weekend price.
