Jebel Jais is the country's highest mountain, in Ras Al Khaimah, about two hours' drive north of Dubai. A paved, signposted road climbs the bare limestone in hairpins to viewing decks, picnic spots, 1484 by Puro (the UAE's highest restaurant) and the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp. Jais Flight, a 2.83 km zipline, is the famous bit, but the views and the dawn hikes cost far less. There is no regular bus up; you need a car or a taxi from RAK city. Go for a day, or a night in a cabin to see sunrise above the clouds.

November to March. The 2025/26 season ran to April 2026 and the summit is cold enough for a jacket in January. The mountain itself is open all year, but the zipline, sledder and hikes pause in the heat; on 18 October 2026 the official site still said it would reopen 'once the weather cools'. Storms close it too: it shut from mid-December 2025 to 31 January 2026 after heavy rain.

RAKTA intercity bus Cheapest
₹700AED 27 one way. Buses stop in RAK city, not on the mountain. From Sharjah Al Jubail it is AED 27 on route 115G.
Hire car

Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- The summit can be near freezing in winter while the coast is 25°C. Bring a warm layer. Fog sometimes cuts visibility on the road in cooler months.
- Jebel Jais shuts after storms for safety checks (it was closed from 17 December 2025 to 31 January 2026). The Jais Sledder was listed as temporarily closed on 18 October 2026. Check the official site the day before.
- The UK FCDO (updated 24 July 2026) warns of possible regional strikes and flight disruption, and says terrorists are likely to try to attack in the UAE. Follow local authorities' instructions.
Ways to spend less
- Skip the zipline and the mountain is nearly free: the road, viewpoints and picnic areas cost only fuel.
- Four people in a hire car pay less each than one taxi round trip from RAK.
- Sleep in RAK city for under AED 150, leave at 5 am, and be at the top for sunrise.
