Sir Bani Yas was made a royal nature reserve by Sheikh Zayed in 1971, and today more than half of its 87 km² is given over to wildlife. Arabian oryx, sand gazelles, giraffes and ostriches live in the Arabian Wildlife Park, and the island holds 42 recorded historical sites, including a 7th–8th-century Christian church and monastery. You drive about two hours west from Abu Dhabi to the Jebel Dhanna jetty, then take a 15–20 minute boat. Stays are almost all Anantara resorts, so this is not a cheap trip. It is a two-night splurge that replaces a theme-park day with something real.

Why Sir Bani Yas Island, instead of Yas Island theme parks: A desert island nature reserve where oryx, gazelles and giraffes roam a savanna, and the ruins of a 1,300-year-old monastery sit among the dunes.

  • Boats run only with weather and Abu Dhabi Ports clearance, and are free only for resort guests. Day visits for non-guests are not confirmed: arrange your crossing with the hotel before you drive out.
  • Activities are priced per person and add up fast. Check the current activity list (prices here are from winter 2025) and whether 5% VAT and service charge are included.

Ways to spend less

  • There is no entry fee for the island itself. Pick one resort night and one wildlife drive, not a package.
  • Book Desert Islands for midweek dates in the shoulder months. The same room swings between about USD 209 and USD 369 a night.
  • Eat your cheap meals in Ruwais on the way in and out. A AED 22 thali there costs less than a resort coffee.
