Everyone's Morocco itinerary starts with Marrakech's souks, snake charmers and relentless touts — Chefchaouen skips all of it. This medina in the Rif foothills is painted almost entirely blue, calm enough to wander alone with a camera, and close enough to Fez or Tangier to slot into any northern Morocco route. Spend your days getting lost in the alleys and hiking out to waterfalls in the hills, not haggling off hustlers.
Instead of Marrakech's medina and souk circuit. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Mar–Nov.

April-June and September-October are best for hiking Akchour and the Rif; December-February brings cold rain to the mountains.

Eating
Moroccan food is meat-forward by default, but vegetable tagines (courgette, carrot, chickpea) are on every menu, and bread, olives, mint tea and fresh orange juice are everywhere and always vegetarian.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Self-appointed 'guides' and touts follow tourists into the medina pushing shops or hash — a firm 'no thank you' and walking on works, don't engage further.
Bargain in the souks — start at 40-50% of the asking price and settle in the middle; fixed-price shops will say so.
Solo women should keep shoulders and knees covered outside the riad; Chefchaouen is calmer than Marrakech or Fez but occasional stares/comments still happen, especially after dark.
How to do it cheaper:
Walk the medina alone at 7-8am before the Tangier and Tetouan day-tour buses arrive — same blue walls, none of the crowd.
Skip the Small Waterfall/God's Bridge loop everyone does and push on to Akchour's Big Waterfall — same trailhead, a third of the people.
Buy CTM tickets the day before in July-August; the Tangier and Fez routes sell out by afternoon in peak season.
