Fes el Bali & Moulay Idriss
Fes el Bali is the world's largest car-free urban zone and home to Al Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 CE and still an active mosque-university — non-Muslims can view its courtyard through the bronze doors but not enter, as with every working mosque in Morocco. Twenty minutes away is Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Morocco's holiest pilgrimage town, built around the tomb of the Idrisid dynasty's founder; non-Muslims were barred from even entering the town until a 2005 royal decree, and the tomb building itself remains closed to non-Muslims, but the town and its rooftop viewpoints are now fully open. Paired with the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis, this is a deeper, far less touristed dose of heritage than Marrakech's Koutoubia and main souks.

Where to stay
Budget riads inside Fes el Bali run ₹1,800–4,500/night for a simple en-suite room around a courtyard; Moulay Idriss now has a handful of small guesthouses if you'd rather stay over there instead of day-tripping from Fes.
Food
Medina stalls sell bissara (fava bean soup), msemen and fresh orange juice for under ₹100 a serving; a sit-down tagine or couscous runs ₹300–600. Moulay Idriss has simple cafés around the main square serving tagines and mint tea.
Local tip: Skip the paid 'official guide' pitch at Bab Bou Jeloud — ask your riad owner to walk you in on day one instead. Alley-touts who claim the tannery or a shop is 'closed for prayer' are usually steering you toward a commission stop, not stating fact.
