The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela holds the tomb of the Apostle St James the Greater (Santiago), and has been one of the great goals of Christian pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. The Camino de Santiago, a web of walking routes across Spain, Portugal and France, ends at its Obradoiro façade, and pilgrims who walk the last 100 km (or cycle 200 km) can collect the Compostela certificate at the Pilgrim's Office. Inside, pilgrims embrace the Romanesque statue of St James above the high altar and pray at the silver reliquary in the crypt. On great feasts the botafumeiro, a giant censer, swings across the transept during the Mass.

Visiting with respect

  • During Mass, stay in your seat or at the back; do not walk around sightseeing or take photos.
  • Queue quietly for the embrace of the statue of St James (el abrazo al Apóstol) and the crypt; it is a prayer for pilgrims, not a photo stop.
  • Leave large backpacks outside, and give way to pilgrims arriving after weeks on the Camino.

Step 6 of 8Next: Stay & food

Where to stay and eat

Stay

The old town has pilgrim hostels (albergues) and small hotels. Hostel beds such as the Albergue Seminario Menor list from about US$26 a night (about ₹2,200) in aggregator snapshots, averaging around US$53; private doubles in the old town cost more. Expect prices and demand to rise through the 2027 Holy Year, especially around 25 July.

Food

The Mercado de Abastos, beside the temporary Mass church of San Agustín, is the place for Galician food: pulpo á feira (octopus), Padrón peppers, tetilla cheese and tarta de Santiago (almond cake). Many bars in the old town offer a set lunch menu (menú del día). Vegetarians will find Padrón peppers, tortilla and cheese easy, and fewer full meals.

Local tip: Climb the rooftops in the late afternoon for the light over Praza do Obradoiro, then go down to San Agustín for the 19:30 Pilgrim's Mass, where the arriving pilgrims' countries of origin are often read out.
