In 1858 Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old miller's daughter, reported eighteen apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the Grotto of Massabielle beside the Gave de Pau river; the Church recognised them in 1862. The Sanctuary that grew around the Grotto is now one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, with basilicas stacked above the rock, daily Masses in many languages and two processions every day. Above all it is a place for the sick: volunteers (hospitaliers) bring pilgrims in wheelchairs and stretchers to the Grotto, the water and the baths, and that care for the sick is what Catholics come to share.
Step 2 of 8Next: Visiting rules↓Visiting rules
Visiting with respect
- Pass through the Grotto in silence; most pilgrims touch the rock as they go by.
- Give way to the sick: wheelchairs and stretchers pushed by hospitaliers always go first, at the Grotto, the baths and in the processions.
- Do not photograph people at the baths or in the care houses, and keep phones silent during Mass and the processions.
Hours and rules can change for festivals and services. Check the official site on the day.
